The project aspires to advance our knowledge of inter-imperial relations beyond conventional geopolitical approaches. Understanding the smuggling seascape and how these two neighbouring powers navigated their shadow relations adds depth to our comprehension of the broader Eastern European economic, social, and political relations and introduces new layers to our appreciation of the region’s modern history.

This project focuses on the less-explored area of illegal trade relations in the context of evolving conflicts between the empires, the changing landscape of legal trade during an era of increasing globalization, and the shift from sail to steam technology. Specifically, it will comprehensively analyse various facets of the smuggling of both goods and people within the established trade routes, connections, and networks. The analysis will examine the macrostructure of the smuggling linkages, focusing on the hinterland of production/origin of clandestine trade and the foreland, the destination of material and human cargoes. It aims to identify the main nodes of export and import and the means of transportation.

This endeavor will be anchored in a newly introduced smuggling network model, which offers a structured framework and a comprehensive methodological approach for thoroughly investigating the subject matter. It takes a multifaceted approach, serving as a bridge between different linguistic and national narratives and disciplinary assumptions. By delving into the nuanced history of smuggling from the perspectives of various empires, the project aims to make significant contributions to Modern History, Political History, Economic History, Maritime History, and studies of empire.

On a societal level, the project will make a significant contribution by offering a historical perspective on phenomena that have contemporary political, geopolitical, economic, and social impacts in both times of peace and times of war. The new historical insights into the smuggling of goods and people in the Black, Azov Seas, and Southeastern Mediterranean will provide the general public with valuable tools to develop a deep understanding of this issue over time.

The aim of the project is to highlight the connection between shipping and maritime trade with industrialization and globalization during the long 19th century, through the example of Piraeus.  The creation of a city from scratch in Piraeus is a central strategic political plan, aiming to serve as the national and international port of the Greek Kingdom, due to its geographical proximity to the new capital of Athens. The city was flooded with populations mainly from the traditional maritime communities of the Aegean and Ionian seas, which were the cradle of sailing shipping in the 18th century. The settlement of these seafaring populations in districts around the port, the demographic composition of the new city and the gradual expansion of the urban fabric reflect the unbreakable link between the port and the city. Until today, the history of Piraeus in the 19th and 20th centuries has overlooked the port, shipping and maritime trade, while the industrial character of the city has historically overshadowed the maritime dimension.

At the core of the project is the concept of the ‘maritime centre’ as a key conceptual and methodological tool.  This research project focuses on the study of the development and functioning of the port and the port area surrounding it, and examines how the maritime economy shaped the city and local industry and contributed to their remarkable growth. For the first time, Piraeus as a maritime center in the 19th century is systematically studied in a global approach, taking into account trade and shipping, services and businesses, port facilities and infrastructure, shipbuilding, and maritime labor.

The aim of this project is to preserve, document and use the ship trenches as an important record of maritime heritage. The novelty of the project consists of a multidisciplinary approach that exploits part of the cultural heritage of the islands and the coastal area as important historical material related to the maritime societies and shipbuilding technology of the 18th and 19th centuries. From the 18th century onwards, local Ionian and Aegean maritime communities were the most prominent seafarers in the Eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea maritime trade from the Eastern to the Western Mediterranean. They developed an admirable shipbuilding knowledge and production in the shipyards of the islands and coastal settlements, where thousands of small and large ships were built. The importance of shipping and the extent of maritime culture ware depicted by the sailors themselves in engravings found on monuments scattered throughout Greek territory. Engravings, inscriptions and drawings show the people’s habit of declaring their identity, presence and communications. A phenomenon that is manifested in a similar way between different cultures, religions and social structures.

Exhibition catalogue and exhibition ” From Counter Stern to Stem: Sailing Ships of the 18th and 19th Centuries”, which was presented at FEMM-Th from October to December 2023. The exhibition is scheduled to open in 2024 in Rethymno (Institute for Mediterranean Studies / FORTH), Syros (Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis) and Athens.

The programme focuses on the structural changes brought by the transition from sail to steam, both in maritime work and in the daily life of maritime communities in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea from the second half of the 19th century to the interwar period. Ship’s logbooks, shipping business documents, account books, notarial records of the maritime community, seamen’s registers from state maritime labour records, population censuses, are some of the types of sources used and collected from different countries of the Mediterranean and Black Sea written in different languages. The SeaLit-FastCat database platform combines both a quantitative and a qualitative approach. It features systematic quantitative data sets on seafarers, allowing us to answer a number of critical questions: seafarers’ wages, manning ratios, old and new types of seafaring occupations, trade routes and voyage lengths. It also features qualitative data, a range of sources such as notarial records, official and private correspondence, newspapers or memoirs that complement our understanding of contemporary views, attitudes and patterns of behaviour concerning shipping and work under the pressure of technological innovation.

The aim of the program is to highlight the role of the merchant and naval fleets in the successful outcome of the War of Independence, but also during the early years of the Greek State, taking into account its economic and military action. Unpublished documents from the General State Archives were studied.

IMS-FORTH. This ongoing project continues the work of the Black Sea Project, of the wider programme “THALES: Strengthening Interdisciplinary and/or Inter-institutional Research and Innovation with the possibility of attracting high level researchers from abroad through the conduct of basic and applied research excellence”, Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs. The project was a collaboration between the Ionian University and the University of Crete, the Institute for Mediterranean Studies/FORTH, the University of Thessaly, the National Research Foundation, the University of the Aegean under the scientific supervision of Gelina Harlaftis.  www.blacksea.gr.

The aim of the project is to record, analyse and synthesize the economic and social development of the Black Sea littoral cities that formed a unified market and made the Black Sea the largest grain-producing region in the world in the second half of the 19th century. Twenty port cities were studied: Varna, Burgas, Constanta, Vraila, Galatsy, Odessa, Nikolaev, Nikolayev, Evpatoria, Theodosia, Kerch, Berdychansk, Mariupol, Taganrog, Rostov, Yenichev, Novorossiysk, Vadum, Trabzon, Samsun, Kerassuda. The project continues to this day with the publication of books, enriching the databases and completing the publication of entries on the port cities, their translation and editing in Greek, English and Russian.
